Wout Mostert, born 13-11-1934 in Rotterdam.
My first musical experiences were in the post-war years 1948 - 1950,
when in Holland the Hawaiian bands "sprang up like mushrooms"; such as
The Kilima Hawaians, with Theo Ehrlicher in charge and the Mena Moeria Minstrels with many songs
that reminded of Dutch Indonesia.
Also the cowboy songs from the "Kilima Ranch", among them
"Er hangt een paardehoofdstel aan de muur" were nice and interesting. Together with schoolfriends I learnt to play the Hawaiian guitar with so-called "cipher chords" and I built my first Hawaiian guitar. Above of the written music the ukulele chords were printed; also that instrument was easy to play. After that switching to the 4-string guitar chords was no longer a problem. |

From Hawaiian music I changed to my first Jazz combo around 1954;
Together with a brother who played the clarinet, 2 backing guitars,
a piano and a tea-chest bass
After my marriage in 1961 and change of employer (TNO in Delft) another combo
was formed there, which played regularly for business parties.
This combo existed for 12 years ! |

After that, there was a period from 1973 - 1989 during which no music was made "outdoors".
However, on Santa Claus evening of 1989, at one of the business parties, I met Jaap Spijk, who was doing a solo performance there. During the interval we happened to meet, combining the two guitars and giving birth to the band "Country Target". After we joined with "Country Stuff" in 1995, "EXCEPT-2" came into being, in which I played dobro, guitar and harmonica untill spring 2005, all the time enjoying it very much ! |
