My musical basis was established in the Sixties.
I was born and raised in a working-class family in The Hague. On birthday parties and family get-togethers both my parents used to play the accordeon, just like me in a later stage. |

In 1977-1978 I spent one year in the USA (Cincinnati, Ohio) as a foreign exchange
student, right on the border of the bluegrass-state Kentucky.
That year has had an enormous influence on me. I picked up a string instrument for the first time (banjo-ukulele) and started singing songs of Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Waylon and Willie, Alabama and other country-bands. A visit to the Grand Ole Opry was one of the highlights that year. |

After returning to the Netherlands I spent 9 years in the Marine Corps.
During that time I have made music north of the Arctic Circle, on board ships, in ports as well as in a band in the Netherlands Antilles. Around that time I also bought a guitar. After many years of not playing (apart from some "attic-music" on keyboard and guitar), I joined a country & western trio in 2002 (Mary Kee Country Company), in which I sang and played guitar. In that year we played at many line-dance events. But the full acoustic bluegrass and country harmonies kept haunting my mind; For me "close harmony singing" is the most beautiful thing there is. When I hear a song, I automatically add a second or a third voice. Great examples for me are the Louvin Brothers, Seldom Scene, Country Gentlemen and The Hillmen. Of course the beautiful harmonies of Ricky Scaggs and Emmylou Harris may not be forgotten ! |

I was introduced to Except-2 in October 2003.
Both Mireille and I now take turns singing lead and backing vocals. I also contribute to shaping the three-pitched vocal harmonies, which are so characteristic for the type of music we all love so much. Apart from singing, I play acoustic rhythm guitar and mandolin. I expect pure magic of the combination of talent and motivation within our band! |
